QR Codes and the USPS

Just in case you weren't aware, the USPS is running a direct mail promotion throughout the months of July and August. I have a 32-page document that details the promotion, but here's what actually matters to you.

If you use a QR code on a direct mail piece, letter or flat, during the months of July and August, the USPS will give you a 3% discount on your postage.

This discount would apply to permit-imprinted letters or flats, mailing First Class, Standard or Non-Profit.

To qualify for the discount, you must display the QR code either outside or within all mailpieces in a mailing.

Do that, and you'll earn your 3% discount.

If you've never generated a QR code before, you need not worry. It is SUPER easy. I generally use http://quikqr.com/.

A New Level of Variable Data

We recently completed our most aggressive variable data project to date. This particular project, shown in the photo above, had a total of 10 areas of variation.

These areas included full color photos, white reverse type on full color photos, complete paragraph variation and multiple areas of personalization. ie- HEY MIKE!

Using multiple software platforms for managing and importing the variable data as well as processing the address data for mailing, we were able to produce an amazing, and what I think is sure to be an effective, direct mail piece for one of our collegiate partners.

Are You Using QR Codes Yet?

I've been fielding more and more questions about QR Bar Codes lately, so here's the skinny...

"A QR Code (it stands for "Quick Response") is a mobile phone readable barcode that's been big in Japan forever, broke into Europe a while back, and is now getting traction in USA.

In it's simplest sense think "print based hypertext link" - simply encode a URL into the QR Code and then point a mobile phone (or other camera-enabled mobile) at it. If the device has had QR Code decoding software installed on it, it will fire up its browser and go straight to that URL.

But it doesn't stop there - a QR Code can also contain a phone number, an SMS message, V-Card data or just plain alphanumeric text, and the scanning device will respond by opening up the correct application to handle the encoded data appropriately..." (qrcodestuff.com)

If you have a smart phone such as a Blackberry, Droid or iPhone for example, simply visit your app store and download one of any number of scanning apps. Most of these are free and most work pretty well. Open the app, point it at the bar code at the top of this post and scan it. It will launch your phone's browser and take you directly to the URL that I have encoded into the barcode. Pretty Cool.

We just produced this pocket folder for one of our partners utilizing SHINE Pearl Metallic by Reich Papers. The resulting piece was so cool that I just had to post about it.

DALLAS TWP. – As Frank Cunius Jr. spoke, the sun peeked behind the clouds bringing a shadow over the solar panels a small group had gathered by on Thursday afternoon.

Even with the shade, Cunius knew the panels were harnessing the sun’s power and keeping his company’s electricity bill down.

The 180 solar panels, installed last December on a grassy area of Payne Printery’s property along Memorial Highway, were pricey but well worth it, said Payne Printery officials. At a cost of close to $400,000, the panels meant a major up-front investment for the company that employs about 60 people.

But thanks in large part to a $99,700 rebate through the state’s Sunshine Grant, the company decided to move forward with the project.

“The biggest catalyst for us to do this was the incentives from the state and federal tax incentives,” Cunius said. “Without that, it’s not even possible to think about doing.”

A state Department of Environmental Protection spokesman thanked company officials their efforts in using alternative energy during the short and informal ceremony. Payne was among a handful of companies and even some residences throughout the state being recognized this month by DEP for their investments and efforts.

Previous stops on the thank-you tour have included Pocono Raceway in Long Pond and future stops include the Crayola Factory near Easton.

“That’s the point of this tour,” said DEP spokesman Mark Carmon, “to show the successes. … On behalf of Gov. (Ed) Rendell and DEP Secretary (John) Hanger, we want to say thank you.”

Carmon said businesses that make the investment in green energy show others that it’s possible and economical and it spur interest in the idea.

566 New Colors from Pantone

With such a huge selection of Pantone colors at your disposal, why not use them. Adding additional colors to your project will surely enhance the piece and in many instances, improve its quality.

For example, you still see a number of projects utilizing screens and process builds to create color for copy. Though this will save you a bit in costs, utilizing 100% of a Pantone color will create much sharper, more readable copy. After all, the goal of the project is to deliver a message, correct?

Running Pantone colors will also increase your control over your press run resulting in a better finished product. Please don't misunderstand me here. You can still produce high quality projects with 4-color process.

My point is that most pieces utilize specific color palettes throughout. If you are trying to keep solid colors or screens consistent from page to page, than you may sometimes find yourself making sacrifices to fleshtones, product shots or other pieces or art within the project.

Running Pantones in these instances will give the press operator much more control over color.

Maybe most importantly, if your organization utilizes a color or colors that directly represent your brand, than the use of a Pantone color is always the best way to maintain consistency across multiple projects.

The Utopia Green Zone

Appleton Coated has put together a very cool and useful website called "The Utopia Green Zone".

As you can see from the screen capture above, it contains four micro-sites that are aimed at educating those interested in "Green" print production.

It's obvious that more and more companies and organizations are expanding their "Green" initiatives and I think that this site from Utopia is a great resource for developing your own standard processes.

It will take you a few minutes to navigate through the site, so grab a coffee or something and get comfortable. It's time well spent spent.

FSC Website Worth Checking Out

I posted a link yesterday on facebook pertaining the FSC and its US website. It occurred to me that it would be worth mentioning on this blog as well.

By now, most of us are all somewhat familiar with the FSC and its mission. But, have you ever taken the time to visit their website? I do all the time as I'm constantly referencing the ever-growing list of certified papers.

You can download their Product Labeling Guide, a very useful tool detailing the do's and dont's of label usage, by clicking on the link in the "Download Center" along the left side of this page. This among several other useful PDFs are available for download on the FSC site as well.

Apples-to-Apples Comparisons?

I'm hearing this more and more these days, but the reality is that there's no such thing. At least not as it pertains to commercial printing.

There are just far too many variables that can affect your project that aren't measured in the "low bid" print environment.

Let's take technology for example. Is it a fair assessment that a new Heidelberg press with 6-color and in-line aqueous coating capabilities would have better print characteristics than an older press with less automation? I think so. But that isn't taken into account in many cases.

In fact, there are so many important factors that aren't always taken into account. Technology is obviously a big one, but what about experience, customer service, the advantages of aqueous coatings over varnishes (which there are many) and environmental awareness to name just a few.

Let's face it, the economic climate right now is not terrific and that's being generous. Companies, big and small, good and bad are bidding on the same pool of business. How can you be sure that you're projects are in the right hands?

The best advice that I can give to you is to know your vendors and ask lots of questions.

If your lowest price is significantly lower than the rest, ask why that is? If you want the benefits of an aqueous coating, make sure that's what you're getting. Varnishes are often substituted for aqueous coatings since a lot of older presses aren't equipped with the capability. I

If you're project has more than 4 colors plus varnishes or coatings, make sure your vendors can produce it in one press pass (unless a special process like a dry-trap spot varnish is called for). There are still a lot of companies that only have 4 or 5 color presses. It's not uncommon in these cases to produce a project in 2 passes, but there's no doubt that this will directly affect print quality.

I guess the point that I'm trying to make here is that not all bids are created equal. If you're aware of the differences between your vendors, you can make an informed decision and ultimately get more value for your print spend.

And of course, when it doubt, just award the project to us. : - )

Magnets Made Easy

So I'm not sure if you've ever gone through the process of sourcing a magnet or not.

It can be a rather lengthy and expensive process if you go through the traditional means of magnet production.

If you have a need for a magnet, than Magnecote is a great solution.

Magnecote has taken Sterling Ultra and combined it with a magnetic coating to create a paper that can be perforated, diecut, laminated and produced on a sheet-fed press.

We've run it on number of occasions and have had great results.

Is Your Brochure Bound for a Binder?

Have you ever even heard of a loop stitch? Don't feel bad if you haven't. There aren't alot of printers out there that do it. In fact, we hadn't for a long time either.

If you have heard of loop stitching, you might have found it to be a pricier form of binding. If so, that's probably because most printers outsource the service and therefore you find yourself paying for the transport of your materials to and from a bindery that does loop stitch.

If you are fortunate enough to have a vendor who has loop stitching capabilities than you've got a great alternative to the standard 3-hole punch technique. Of course, when I refer to your vendor I'm talking about us!

Don't get me wrong, the standard 3-hole punch approach is fine. We're happy to do that for you. But, the loop stitch is definitely more functional and looks much cooler as an end product.

Let Your Audience Know that You Print Responsibly

House Sheets Offer Excellent Value

Now please don't get me wrong, there are some really great sheets out there that we love to print on.

But, we have a very strong line up of House Sheets that I'm sure will meet your needs and... wait for it... save you some money too.

All FSC Certified, they offer a variety of weights, coatings, and brightness as well varying degrees of recycled content.

Diamond is a premium (number 1) sheet with 10% post-consumer recycled fiber. It's available in Matte, Silk, and Gloss finishes, is produced both acid and chlorine free and offers a 92 brightness.

Tower is a number 2 sheet also with 10% post-consumer recycled fiber. It is available in Satin and Gloss finishes and offers a 87 brightness on a double-coated smooth surface.

Endurance is our newest house sheet and we've been really impressed with its results. Endurance is another number 2 sheet available in Silk and Gloss finishes. Though FSC Certified, it is not a recycled sheet. However, Endurance does offer a great surface for print and a 93 to 96 brightness depending on finish.

The executives at Payne Printery know today’s customers want more “green”-based solutions that lessen the impact of production on the environment. With that in mind, Payne recently completed the installation and integration of a new 56 kilowatt solar energy array on its Dallas Township site. The project was made possible, in part, through grants and incentives offered by the state and federal government.

Cool New iPhone App from Pantone

The video above is a walk through for the new iPhone app developed by Pantone. It obviously has a number of cool features and comes loaded with the following libraries:

* PANTONE MATCHING SYSTEM® (coated, uncoated and matte)
* PANTONE Goe™ (coated and uncoated)
* PANTONE Pastels (coated and uncoated)
* PANTONE FASHION + HOME (paper and cotton)

Neenah Paper has a similar iPhone app available as well. I should be receiving a video walk through for that one shortly. I'll post it once I have it.

Though these are both cool apps for the iPhone, please remember that you are essentially viewing Pantone colors on an RGB device. That being said, please don't bring your iPhone on a press approval.

Payne Solar Array Near Completion

I thought that I would post a few pictures of our new solar array here at Payne.

The team from Keystone Energy has been working very closely with us to assure the system's smooth implementation.

This investment is a big step forward in offsetting our power consumption and continuing our efforts in environmental awareness.

Adding a "Printed with Solar Energy" mark along with an Eco-Audit and FSC or Eco-Ink logo will also allow our customers and partners to make environmentally responsible statements of their own.

NEW Postal Regulations for Soft-Folded Mailers

Above you'll see a page taken from the Domestic Mail Manual pertaining to Soft-Folded Mailers and such. This is an important change in postal regulations for a number of reasons.

For example, this change will result, in most cases, in multiple passes on tabbing equipment. This will add time and some material costs to your mailing that you would have once not had to contend with.

Also, it would appear that the days of smaller, perforated wafer-seals are over. These new regulations call for the use of multiple 1.5", non-perforated tabs.

You will likely have one of two wafer-seal options to choose from; one of which is a clear vinyl material and the other is a translucent paper material. The clear vinyl obviously looks the best, but the translucent paper will tear more easily and do less damage to the printed piece that it was stuck to.

Payne & Superman: The Similarities are Undeniable

First of all, if you're reading this, thanks for visiting our blog. We've been working really hard to drop a Payne site around every corner of Internet.

We launched this new blog site and a bunch of product specific pages, we're revamping our existing corporate site and client center, and have now infiltrated the social network scene!

Okay, so I'll admit that I'm am a little addicted to facebook. In my defense, it is a great way to communicate and to get to know people. I thought that since I was logging in quite a bit anyway, I might as well put Payne in the mix.

YUPO Synthetic Papers

If you're looking for something truly unique, YUPO is definitely a cool option.

We've been successful in our experiences with YUPO and just recently ran a number of coating tests on the synthetic sheet to help educate ourselves on best, YUPO, production practices.

Much like a translucent, YUPO presents some challenges as it pertains to drying and needs to handled very carefully throughout the production process. This drying issue typically drives costs up as the presstime can run long in an effort to prevent marking, scuffing, and so on.

YUPO recently added Accel to their synthetic lineup which is a fast-drying version of the original YUPO. In addition to it drying nearly 80% faster than its predecessor, Accel is a much brighter, bluer, white resulting in excellent color reproduction.

We tested the Accel sheet and would absolutely recommend it over other YUPO sheets.

I must say that it's so nice to not see snow on the ground. Don't get me wrong, the snow is nice for a little while; but nothing beats the sunshine.

I've been meaning to post a picture of our building, but just hadn't gotten around to it. So yesterday, on my way down the driveway, I pulled the over and took a quick shot.

Since we do quite a bit of business out of the area as well, I thought those of you who haven't been here to visit us yet might like to see our building.

Our facility is about 52,000 square-feet in size and houses all prepress, pressroom, finishing, mailing and fulfillment operations.

NCAA Tournament Champs!

Why is a printing company posting about North Carolina basketball? That's a good question.

As a family-owned and operated business for more 75 years, our history is rich with print craftsmanship, innovation, and yep... Carolina basketball.

That is, Tom Gauntlett, an owner and President here at Payne attended the University from 1963-1967 where he played basketball under legendary coach Dean Smith. Tom played in the Final 4 in 1967, but the Tar Heels lost to Dayton.

If you tuned in to the Final 4 or Tournament Championship this year, you might have seen Tom sitting in the 4th row; which is pretty cool. But what's even cooler is the lunch with former Carolina basketball alums like Michael Jordan on the afternoon before the big game.

It's been my experience that prospects and customers have always felt very comfortable with our company and its capacity; especially after visiting our facility.

For those of you who haven't had the opportunity to come and see us yet, our operations are housed in a 52,000 square-foot, state-of-the-art facility located in Northeastern Pennsylvania.

We utilize the very latest in Heidelberg technology from workflow management, to prepress, printing, and finishing.

CMYK Fashion Statement

I couldn't resist posting this! A friend of mine from the 4th grade uploaded our class photo to her Facebook profile at the end of the last week.

At first, I didn't make the connection, but then another friend of mine brought this to my attention this weekend... I'm actually wearing CMYK!

I guess some people are just destined for commercial printing!

I know... the suspenders are pretty cool.

New Address Standards for Commercial Flat-Size Mail

The Postal Service has adopted new address placement and formatting requirements!

Effective Date: March 29, 2009

How will this affect you?

Address Placement:
* The new placement standards apply to all Periodicals, Standard Mail and Package Services flats mailed at presort, carrier route, and automation prices. (they DO NOT APPLY to First-Class Mail)

* The delivery address must be entirely within the top half of the mailpiece -
The "Top" is:
A) the shorter edges on enveloped or polywrapped pieces, and on the Carrier Route (or ECR) saturation pieces.
B) The upper edge when the spine is placed on the right-hand side of an unenclosed piece.

Address Placement - Step-by-Step:
Identify the "top" of the mailpiece...
* Front or back of the mailpiece
* Either of the shorter edges, or the upper edge with the spine on the right
* The "top" has nothing to do with the printing on the piece or how it is constructed. Pretend the mailpiece is a blank object
* Define the "top half." Fold and crease the piece, or measure with a ruler
*Place the delivery address entirely in the top half. It can be parallel or perpendicular to the top edge, but not upside-down
* Now place the postage and return address in relation to delivery address as it is read (postage to the right or upper right, return address to the upper left)

Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Information

I thought that this was pretty informative:

What's up with MetalFX?

There are a few important notables pertaining to Metal FX that I thought I should share.

First things first... If you're not familiar with Metal FX, it is a new technology that allows designers and print providers to produce a virtually unlimited number of metallic colors and effects by utilizing one additional press ink and plate and applied in a single press pass.

That is, Metal FX produces gold and silver "base" metallic inks that react with any process screen or photo that is printed over the top of it. Now, it's obviously not that simple. There is, of course, a certification process involved to assure that suppliers are capable of utilizing MFX technology.

Some of you may have heard that Ciba Coating Effects, the company that produces Metal FX, is closing down the MFX division. That is true. Jim Walker, Business Manager at MFX, states the main reason for this decision was that MFX simply didn't fit into their core business.

What does that mean to you? Not that much really. Companies such as ours that have already been certified are still able to offer the product. Though, the software and applicable training is no longer being offered, Metal FX base inks are still available.

Soft-Touch Aqueous Coating is, well... Pretty Cool

So, we're all familiar with satin, matte, gloss, uncoated, and non-curl aqueous coatings right?

What you may or may not be familiar with is soft-touch aqueous coating. As far as its application is concerned, it's exactly the same as the others. But, it feels completely different to the touch.

The truth is, I don't really know how to describe it. It almost has a rubbery feel to it... if that makes any sense.

The PROS to this coating is that is seals and protects press sheets as the other coatings do, it is completely ink-jet addressable so it's ideal for direct mail, and it looks awesome when you combine it with a dry-trap spot gloss varnish.

Actually, the dry-trap varnish effect works best on darker backgrounds; black for example. You'll get excellent contrast between the soft-touch, muted area and the gloss varnished sections.

We obviously have samples we can send to you if you'd like to see them. Or you can jump right in the pool and give it a try. Either way, you won't be disappointed.

Union Printing Gaining More Support

It seems that now more than ever, customers and prospects are showing support for union suppliers by adding union bugs to their projects.

Everyday I hear someone refer to printing as a commodity, but that's just not the case. Our pressmen are true craftsmen and they approach each and every project with the same level of care and attention to detail. That's something that I think we can all agree, makes a difference.

As you may or may not know, a printer's union bug is a unique identifier that can be traced right back to the company who printed a particular piece.

That being said, you won't often find poor quality printing associated with a union supplier.

Oh yeah, did I mention that we're union?

Postal Flat Change

Here's something that you might find interesting. New postal regulations pertaining to flats will take place on March 29th of this year. You may already know this, but here's something that I hadn't thought about.

As it pertains to "flats" (items greater than or equal to 6.125 x 11.5), the address area must be located on the top half of the mailer. The definition of the "top half" is essentially the short side.

If you are creating a self-mailer or envelope, please note that the address area will no longer be in the center of the piece. The envelope above would no longer be acceptable under these new regulations. The address area would have to be located to the left or the right of the dotted line.

If you have any inventoried items that were designed within the old regulations, you might want to check in with your USPS Entry Point Facility (bulk mail) to see if any exceptions will be made.

Eco Audits Becoming More Popular

With initiatives like the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), environmentally friendly printing has become a large part of our business.

More and more of our customers are showing their support for the environment by utilizing "GREEN" print logos such as that of the FSC or parallel schemes such as Rainforest Alliance and SFI.

These certifications all essentially say the same thing. That is, that certified suppliers or those who utilize certified suppliers support sustainability.
